Are you unhappy, struggling with the challenges of the world, anxious, tired, depressed, trying to manage relationships that are painful or difficult, suffering in the valley of trauma, abuse, or general loss?
Are you feeling alone and far from God? On the whole, most Americans identify as ‘culturally Christian’. Prior to being saved five years ago, if asked my religion I would have said I was a Christian.
Many people grow up in the church and then, while maintaining their beliefs, find themselves further and further from the feeling of the love of God. Some of us attend church on Sunday but live secular lives outside the church walls.
So, the word ‘Christian’ means different things to different people.
How close are you to the love of God? How do you feel about developing a deeper more intimate relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit?
It is common for people to spend time in the faith and then drift away over time, becoming lukewarm without realizing the shift happened.
Since being saved, a world has opened up to me. I now have a relationship with Jesus and find increasing peace day by day, through the sustaining power of the Holy Spirit. What was once a religion, a theology, a philosophy became a relationship.
As a secular therapist I used to teach clients something I called ‘flip the script’. The idea was to catch any negative self-talk in the moment and flip it to the positive. Research in neuroplasticity (the brains ability to change) shows that we can retrain our brains to be more hopeful, joyful, and peaceful. We can go from trashing ourselves all day, to feeling positive and hopeful.
As a Christian counselor, I apply this secular tool, but through the lens of biblical teaching. The more we hold every thought captive to the Lord, the more we focus our eyes up, the more we look for the blessings in our lives, the happier we will be.
The rewards of walking the straight path, with the Holy Spirit leading us, are endless. We find that we suffer less and our attitude toward suffering changes.
If you’re currently feeling far from God and battered by the chaos in the world and would like to explore counseling with a therapist who combines secular counseling tools with sound biblical teaching, I would love to help you. I pray you reach out today.
